Welcome to my collection of photos of birds and other wildlife. I'm a recreational birder (since 1987) and photographer (since 2002) focusing, so to speak, on birds, especially seabirds, and marine mammals, primarily in North and Central America. I live in Santa Cruz, California, and previously lived in Oakland, California, and Boston, Massachusetts (and many other places before I became a birder).

Click "tree view" on any gallery page for a list of all of the species depicted. Click on any thumbnail to see a larger version of the image. Click on the image to go back to the gallery page. You can also click the "next" and "previous" buttons to move through the images in a gallery. Where and when the photo was taken, equipment used, and camera settings are listed below every photo. All photos are of wild, unrestrained animals unless noted otherwise.

A major part of my motivation for putting these photos on the web is to draw attention to the plight of the many species that are at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction, pollution, global warming, introduced exotic species and diseases, or over-hunting. Many of the species in these galleries are listed as endangered, declining or vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy, North American Bird Conservation Initiative or Partners In Flight, or under the U.S. Endangered Species Act or the California Endangered Species Act. I have contributed many photos to these organizations and many others, including Audubon, Center for Biological Diversity, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for use in their publications and websites. I also enjoy contributing to on-line photo databases and forums, such as the Cornell Lab of Ornitholgy’s Macaulay Library, BirdForum’s Opus, the Field Guide: Birds of the World group on Flickr, iNaturalist and CalPhotos.
